ON THE ROAD AGAIN!!!
Once I figured I wanted to go too this, my first task was to get a room. So when I got a room the rest was downhill from there or so I thought. As time went on I was seeing the GAS prices rising, at least once a day (at least here where I am) gas was going up up up and it looked like I was going to have to cancel my trip. But I decided that I was not going to be held back by something as simple as gas stop me this time. Keeping in contact with my roommate I would be sharing a room with it was plain to see that the excitement was getting the best of me and before I knew it, it was time to leave for the SOUL PATROL CONVENTION. I had packed my suitcase a few days before I was to leave so I could make sure that I had everything I needed for my trip. I had planned to leave around midnight on Friday but the excitement got the best of me so I left around 9 pm. Friday night. I had made this trip so many times I could do it in the dark so that’s what I did. Two straight highways there, 85 S and 20 W and 5 hours later I am pulling up the Doubletree hotel. After parking my car, grabbing my suitcase and heading for the front desk, go my key and to the elevator. As I arrived at my room I sort of hesitated because my roommate thought I was arriving around 7 a.m. so I knocked first then opened the door and woke my roommate up to let her know I was here. I settled in and we talked for awhile then went to sleep. Woke up ready to go and I went looking for the breakfast that was suppose to be going on at the Pancake House but never found anyone. So I went back to the hotel and hung around for awhile to see if I could run into any SP members. My thoughts were that a vast majority of them were going to the Harmonica thing and the Hall of Fame where Taylor’s collection was being unveiled. As the Sloss Furnances concerts drew close I ran into a couple of SP’ers that were looking for where the Sloss furnances were so I asked if I could ride with or ever follow them but they were kind enough to let me ride along. Riding around for what seemed forever we finally found the SF and parked. I was very surprised on how the Furnances looked like and could not believe that they were going to have the concerts here but OMFG!!!!! The sound that came from the band there were simply nothing short of “magnificent”, and I mean all the bands not just one or two. I felt like I was in a great big stadium with the speakers all around me you know like, SURROUND SOUND. WOO HOO!!!!!!!!!!!! When we got there it wasn’t long before the first band played and there were only 5 people there besides the bands. Little by little more people began to show up and the place began to rock. The music was great and meeting all of the soulpatroler’s what more could you ask for. Great music, great friends and good food, now that’s what I am talking about!!!!! By the time LiMBO hit the stage everyone was getting anxious and by the end there was around 15 people let there. All I have to say is that all the bans there were playing great even though the crowd was thin but they played as if there were thousands of people there. Real professionals if you ask me and I am so glad I was there to be a part of it. One thing is that I feel there will NOT be a SPC 2. After the concerts, Headed back to the hotel for a shower and a change of clothes, waiting for the PUB CRAWL to start. After a while there were several of us waiting and all of a sudden a Limo pulls up in front of the hotel, then Claudia arrives and it’s off. Our first stop was Metro Bistro. Now the whole time we are going from bar to bar it is pouring down rain. LiMBO and Erin Mitchell was there along with just about a room full of SOUL PATROLERS. WOW!!!!! I was having a great time along with everyone that was there. Even our Limo driver was enjoying the band. Then a little birdie told me that Taylor Hicks was going to be at ONA’s and since that was our next stop we went there. As it was still pouring down rain we ran through the rain into ONA’s and quickly found seats and in just minutes Taylor Hicks walks in and soon after Spoonful James takes the stage. Wynn calls Taylor up in just seconds and then magic. I was front row but people were getting up and dancing in front of me so I got up too!!! I swear Taylor get better and better with every performance and this one top them all. When Taylor sang LADY by The Little River Band, I though there was no one else in the room but me and Taylor and he was singing it only to me, (Well That’s How I really felt) and when Taylor sang, “Bring It On Home” well that just put me over the top. OMFG!!!! What a beautiful song. As Taylor would say, This Could Be A Baby Making” song especially the way Taylor sung it. Taylor and Spoonful James were great and Taylor left after about 5 songs. So now on to our next stop, and by now there are 4 more people in the Limo and we are on out way to Marty’s, and it is still pouring down rain. Now I have thought that the Metro Bistro was small but Marty’s OMG!!!! My living room is bigger but it is packed and we are there to see Jeff Lopez and Co. By now I am wondering what our Limo driver is thinking about all of us girls going from bar to bar, but I think he is having a good time to since he went into every bar we were in. It was get to be around 3:30 a.m. and I was ready to head back to the hotel and call it a night. My day went so good having been to the Sloss Furnances and the topping it off with a little Taylor was the end to a great time. On Sunday me and 4 others decided to go to the Open Door Café’ for some Jeff Lopez and it was great. We sat and talked to Jeff for awhile and then we all said our good-by’s and I headed home. Well I can now say that I have been to most of the places that Taylor Hicks himself has played and I can just imagine him and the band playing there. You know, I just love Birmingham AL. I am beginning to know that city pretty good now. Now I want to say to everyone I met for the first time and to those I have met before that I have never had such a good time with such a great group of people. I look forward to every time we can get together. I have no pictures or videos just memories that I will treasure forever. Now that I have done my recap I feel the need to say this. I really felt sorry for the last couple of bands that played at Sloss Furnances because the closer the time got for the Hanna house benefit the fewer the people that were there, by the time LiMBO took the stage there were about 15 left but they played like there were 1000’s of people there. True Professionals if you ask me. OK!! Yes it is true that someone offered me there ticket to see Taylor at the benefit, but I knew that they would not give up that ticket, that would be CRAZY. I knew I was not going to get that ticket from her. -------------------- ![]() "Touring.....Touring is my big thing......I've always.....I've always toured my ASS off.......Ya Know!!!! Sounds like a had a wonderful time, it's too bad about the low turnout. Maybe they should try for another one but during the summer when most people take vacation time. Would have loved to attended but just wrong timing. Hoepfully some pictures of the event will surface!!
